Application of Palladium Catalyst in Nitrogen Purification

Palladium catalyst is a highly efficient deoxidizer and has extensive and important applications in nitrogen purification. The following introduces its application from aspects such as principle, scenarios, and advantages:

Application Principle

The palladium catalyst is prepared by using activated alumina as a carrier, coating a layer of palladium chloride on its surface, and then reducing it with hydrogen. Its deoxidation principle is to catalyze the reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. When nitrogen containing oxygen is mixed with hydrogen and passes through the catalyst, oxygen and hydrogen react under the action of the catalyst to form water (2H2+O2=2H2O2), thereby achieving the purpose of deoxidizing and purifying nitrogen.

Application Scenarios

  • Post - treatment system of nitrogen generators: It is commonly used in the post - treatment system of nitrogen generators and nitrogen purification devices to remove oxygen from ordinary nitrogen. It can purify ordinary nitrogen into high - purity nitrogen with a purity higher than 99.999%.
  • Chemical synthesis field: In the chemical synthesis field, such as in acrylonitrile production plants, before the ammoxidation reaction, the oxygen content in the air is controlled below 5 ppm through a palladium - catalyzed deoxidation tower. This can increase the acrylonitrile yield by 3 - 5% and also ensure the purity of nitrogen to meet production requirements.
  • Food packaging industry: The nitrogen filling packaging production line uses palladium catalysts to treat nitrogen, which can reduce the oxygen content to below 0.5 ppm, effectively extending the shelf life of food and providing high - purity nitrogen for food packaging.
