Understand the hazards and characteristics of ozone


The properties of ozone: Ozone O3 is an allotrope of oxygen, which is a kind of lavender gas with a fishy smell under normal temperature and pressure. The boiling point is -125C and the density is 2.114kg/m2. The weight is 1.5 times that of oxygen. The solubility in water is 10 times that of oxygen. In addition, ozone also has the following important properties.

(1) Instability-Ozone is unstable and easily decomposes by itself at room temperature, generating oxygen and releasing heat. The presence of catalysts such as Pt and C or ultraviolet radiation will promote the decomposition of ozone, and the decomposition rate of ozone produced by the ozone generator in the air is related to the ozone concentration and temperature. When the concentration is below 1%, the higher the decomposition rate temperature, the faster the decomposition, and the higher the concentration, the faster the decomposition. The decomposition rate of ozone in aqueous solution is much faster than that in gas phase, and it is strongly catalyzed by hydroxyl ions. The higher the pH, the faster the decomposition. The decomposition rate of ozone produced by the ozone generator in distilled water is about 15-30 minutes at room temperature.

(2) Solubility-the solubility of ozone in water is 10 times higher than pure oxygen and 25 times higher than air. The solubility mainly depends on the temperature and the partial pressure of the gas phase, and is also affected by the total pressure of the gas phase. Under normal pressure, the ratio of the concentration of ozone in water to the equilibrium concentration in the gas phase at 20°C is 0.285.

(3) Toxicity-high-concentration ozone is a toxic gas, which has a strong stimulating effect on the eyes and respiratory organs. The concentration of ozone in the normal atmosphere is (1~4)X10-8. When the ozone concentration reaches (1~10)X10-6, it can cause headaches, nausea and other symptoms.

(4) Oxidation-Ozone is a strong oxidant, and its redox electricity price is related to pH. In acidic solution, E=2.07V, the oxidizing ability is second only to fluorine; in alkaline solution, E=1.24V, oxidizing ability is slightly lower than chlorine (E=1.36V). The strong oxidizing property of ozone has been used for disinfection of urban water supply for nearly a hundred years. Ozone has strong bactericidal properties and fast speed. It can kill viruses and spores that cannot be killed by chlorine, and the effluent has no peculiar smell, but when the dosage is insufficient , May also produce intermediate products harmful to the human body. In industrial wastewater treatment, ozone can be used to oxidize a variety of organic and inorganic substances, such as phenols, cyanides, organic sulfides, unsaturated aliphatic and aromatic compounds.

(5) Corrosiveness-Ozone is highly corrosive, so the containers and pipelines in contact with it should be made of corrosion-resistant materials or treated with corrosion-resistant materials. The corrosion-resistant materials can be stainless steel or plastic.
